SENATOR CHANG: STATE OF THE STATE ADDRESS PROVIDES IMPORTANT EMPHASIS ON HOUSING

January 25, 2021

Honolulu, HI – State Senator Stanley Chang (D-9) released the following statement following Governor Ige’s State of the State address, which identified housing as one of Hawaii’s primary issues:

“I applaud Gov. Ige’s State of the State address today, which emphasized the need to build housing on state properties along the rail line, add infrastructure to enable the housing, and use school lands for teacher housing. Even though Hawaii is experiencing the worst economic and public health crisis in generations, the cost of housing continues to hit record highs. We know we need more housing-- way more. I stand ready to fight for Gov. Ige’s ambitious housing agenda in the Senate.”

To lessen the current housing shortage, it is an imperative that the state builds at least 65,000 units on state-owned land as soon as possible. A.L.O.H.A. Homes, which Senator Chang has proposed again this legislative session, will accomplish this-- at no additional cost to taxpayers.
